3 tips for collecting backlinks

Within the oversight of online marketing, collecting backlinks is still an important part of online marketing strategy. While some determined that backlinks do little good for a website's ranking in Google anymore, others say that the number of links actually determines to a large extent what position you will rank at. Starting off, I will explain exactly what backlinks are, how best to collect them and what to watch out for when collecting links.

What are backlinks?

Backlinks are references from one Web site to another Web site. When someone posts a link to your website or their own website, it is a backlink.

In the early days of Google, ranking in Google was explicitly determined by the number of backlinks a website had. This was from the idea that an important website has many links and therefore must be a relevant website. Nowadays, Google no longer looks at links alone because it was easy to manipulate. However, it still seems to be an important factor for your website's ranking in Google. Nowadays it also looks closely at the quality of the link. For example, a link on a university's website is worth more than a link on a home page.

Ask others for backlinks

Collecting backlinks is called link building. An easy way to collect quality links is to ask acquaintances. Consider customers, for example. Chances are they will want to place a link on their Web site that points to your Web site.

You can also search for websites where your organization's name is mentioned. Is there no link behind it yet? Then you can contact the administrator of the website to ask them to create a link where the name of the organization is already mentioned.

Using directories

These include startpagina.nl or expertpagina.nl, for example. These are aggregate websites. Here you can get backlinks quickly, by making a request. The quality of these links is only not as high as, for example, a link on a client's website. Also, the request is not always accepted, for example if your website is not relevant to the content of the home page. Also, if there are enough links on it, the request can be submitted.

Writing press releases

Writing press releases is a way of link building that takes a lot of time and the outcome is uncertain. When you do manage to achieve a link with this, you do get a very valuable backlink immediately. Do you have a piece of news about the company or something else worth sharing? Then write a press release and send it to online newspapers and blogs. If the content suits the platform's target audience and it is newsworthy enough, chances are they will post the press release. This will give you a very valuable and relevant link. However, it is important here that the press release is newsworthy and relevant. These online platforms will receive an awful lot of press releases daily and only post the most relevant ones. So you need to stand out.

Looking for broken links

The Internet is full of broken backlinks. A broken link occurs because, for example, someone removes a website or just a page from a website. When someone else links to this web page or website, a broken link is created.

Do you find a broken link that fits your area of expertise? Then you can notify the administrator of the page that there is a broken link on the page. In this way, you are helping the administrator, so to speak. Now you can ask the administrator to replace the link with a link to your own website because it also fits the content. Because you help the administrator find broken links, they are more likely to place a link from you. However, it is important that your link fits the content as well as the broken link, otherwise the site administrator will not place your link. Of course, it must be relevant to the website visitors.

Pitfalls in collecting backlinks

There are also many pitfalls in link building. Google is getting smarter and wants to get rid of non-relevant websites. So it is increasingly important to collect quality links. There are websites that do this by buying backlinks. Absolutely do not do this! Google penalizes websites that buy links because this has nothing to do with how relevant a website is to Google users. This is ultimately Google's goal, though. To provide websites that are most relevant to the user's search query.

In addition to not buying backlinks, it is also important to prefer quality over quantity. Quantity of links used to be more important than their quality; now it's the other way around. So make sure you only get linked on websites that fit your product or service. A tip here is to look at the domain authority of a Web site. Is the domain authority higher or about the same as that of your own website? Then the quality of the link is probably better than when the domain authority of the website is lower than yours. You can find out the domain authority using different tools. We use the Moz Toolbar for this purpose. This tool is free and very easy to use.

Getting started with link building

At BTTR, we believe that in 2023, collecting backlinks is still important for good ranking in Google. However, it is important here that you go for quality links rather than collecting as many links as possible. It is also important to have a good content marketing strategy. Make your content so relevant that other websites want to link to you or that others want to post your content, such as blogs. That way, you will collect relevant and quality links, which will increase your ranking in Google!
